CLIQ Explores Elder Mistreatment and Intersections with Domestic and Intimate Partner Violence

In November 2025, the Dr. Barrie Strafford Centre for Learning, Innovation, and Quality completed an in-depth exploration into elder mistreatment and the complex relationships affecting older adults. The study examined how elder mistreatment overlaps with domestic violence and intimate partner violence, revealing that these forms of violence often intersect, particularly among older women.

The report highlights a pressing concern: despite the interconnected nature of elder mistreatment, Canada’s service landscape remains fragmented. Many older adults - especially women, individuals living with disabilities, and those from culturally diverse backgrounds - face barriers that prevent them from accessing timely recognition, support, and safety.

This research represents the first step in CLIQ’s efforts to better understand and address the needs of the populations served by The Brenda Strafford Foundation. By analyzing the intersections between elder mistreatment, domestic violence, and intimate partner violence, the report identifies key gaps in services and highlights opportunities for creating more coordinated, inclusive support systems.

As a foundational step, this report lays the groundwork for future initiatives aimed at improving safety, recognition, and support for vulnerable older adults across Canada.
